Welcome To
Our Diaspora Journey

Join us, as we explore the movement of the Chinese diaspora, and how the culture and cuisine have changed with migration. We hope to take you on a journey to revisit the familiar, to question what is original, and to reconnect with our roots.

The story of any people, any culture, has, and will always involve movement. As people move, they adapt, and hard-to-find ingredients are replaced with what can be found locally. Elements of other cuisines and cultures are absorbed, giving birth to unique new cuisines.

Migration, the movement of people, creates new threads, new cultures, new cuisines - many of which we know very little of, the origins of which, even less. The ways they crosslink to tell the story of a people is endlessly fascinating.

Executive Chef,
Chin Wong

Chin spent the first year of his culinary career staging in the best restaurants he could get himself into across Singapore and Thailand. One of his stages landed him a gig at Long Chim in Singapore and thereafter, he picked up a role at Upstairs at Mikkeler in Bangkok.

During this time whilst living in Bangkok, Chin met the “single biggest influence” of his career, Chef Riley Sanders, and Chin had been there to help Chef Riley open up Canvas in Bangkok. This proved to be a turning point, growth-wise.

From there, he was headhunted as Chef de Cuisine to head Six Senses Singapore hotel kitchen. Then a stint at Ensue by Christopher Kostow in Shenzhen followed.

Right before returning to Malaysia, Chin was heading the main resort restaurant Tree Tops, Anantara Lawana in Koh Samui.

To us, cuisine is not just the sum of its dishes, nor is it just a collection of ingredients. Above all, it is also a collection of stories. It is history. It is culture.

Diaspora cuisine is, to us, an expansion of those stories of its origin. How and why people travelled to new lands. They tell our stories, and how we came to be in the lands we are in today. We hope to share these stories with you.

Located at the heart of Kuala Lumpur, we welcome you with open arms and plates full of stories. Journey through the Diaspora evolution with us, one plate at a time.
